Livingstone’s final Journey in Zambia
PURPOSE: Retrace Dr. Livingstone’s Final Journey
Dr. David Livingstone was one of the most famous explorers ever to roam the African Continent. His travels in Africa started in the early 1840’s in Cape Town and continued until his death in 1873 near the village of Chitambo in Zambia.
Throughout his years of exploring the African Continent, Dr. Livingstone maintained a strong and sometimes tenuous relationship with the Royal Geographic Society of London, as they were the sponsors of several of his expeditions. His journeys took him through magnificent lands that offered mental and physical challenges of which we can only imagine today. Remember in those days there were no navigation systems or motor vehicles. Most of his travels took place via boat or on foot.
Livingstone explored Africa for over thirty-five years and made several new discoveries including the first sighting of Victoria Falls.
We have decided on his final journey. On this expedition we follow in the footsteps of Livingstone. Most of our days are spent traveling over rugged terrain on foot and via canoe on remote not often traveled waterways. Sometimes on our journey we will be traveling by 4WD vehicle. Passages and maps from Livingstone’s personal journals are given to participants, so you can track our daily progress.
Our Expedition will be lead by local guide, Mark Harvey. Mark is a third generation Zambian and his family property is in an area where Livingstone passed through on one of his journeys. So Mark is very well versed on local Livingstone history. This expedition has only been completed once before as Mark Harvey and Steve Krenzen did it in 1999, so this is the first time it has been attempted since 1999.

Nile River Tour, Sudan- Egypt
PURPOSE: Follow the Nile River exploring its Ancient History and Sites
Sudan is the large country located just south of Egypt and it also has many historic sites from the same ancient time periods. Sudan gets one-tenth as many travelers as Egypt. Again most folks only see the Egyptian sites and miss the wonder that Sudan has to offer. Our journey will commence in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan.
The Nile River passes right through downtown Khartoum. We will take a great motorboat ride on the River; witnessing the exact spot where the White Nile and Blue Nile meet. Once we depart the Khartoum area we head north following the Nile River. The Sudan portion of our journey will take about nine days. En route our main focus will be the Nile area historic sites, including the Pyramids of Merowe, ancient Temples and Jebel Berka.
Our final destination in Sudan will be Wadi Haifa, which is on the border with Egypt. We will board the ferryboat and cross Lake Nasser. The trip takes about twenty-four hours. We arrive south of the city of Aswan. As we end our boat trip across the lake, we then board a train for the short ride into Aswan. Upon our arrival in Aswan we will board our five-star cruise ship for our journey on the Nile. This will be three days traveling from Aswan to Luxor. Some of the most famous historic sites in all of Egypt are on this route! We then spend the next day visiting the Luxor Temples and the Valley of the Kings. Our trip together will end in Luxor, however we offer several extensions, as there are many options and we realize these choices are your individual preference.

NOTE:
There are many international reports as to ongoing conflict in the Dafur area of Sudan.
I have recently traveled to Sudan and can report the area in and around Khartoum and the entire north is safe and fine for travel.
The conflict area is several thousand kilometers away from our route.
The Sudanese people are some of the friendliest and finest folks I have met in all my travels throughout Africa.

Dhow Sailing Route
Purpose: Follow the historic Dhow trading route from Zanzibar to Mombasa
This exciting trip will take us about four days. If you have ever been to Zanzibar or the east coast of Africa you most likely have seen a Dhow Sailing Vessel. They are one of a selected few boats that are still made today in the old traditional way. We will visit one of these Dhow makers while we are in Zanzibar. It is definitely a major undertaking. There are many different sizes of the Dhow Sailing Vessel; the large ones are used for commercial purposes transporting goods from Zanzibar to the mainland and back. We will be traveling on one of these large Dhows as we follow the historic trading route from Zanzibar to Mombasa.
Upon your arrival a couple of days before we set sail, we will have dinner with our Captain. In addition to enjoying some fantastic local food, our Captain will inform us of some of the goods we will be transporting. If you wish to try your luck at sea trading, you will know what goods to purchase in Zanzibar that have a saleable value in Mombasa.
