Busanga Plains is a wetland area in the far northern region of Kafue National Park. During most of the year the Plains are flooded and make a perfect but inaccessible bird sanctuary. However, during the dry season (normally from July to October) the plains are accessible by four wheel drive vehicle and it makes every effort doing so very worthwhile. The vast open plains are ideal to spot wildlife, and wildlife there is!
Surrounded on all sides by seasonal swamp lands, Thorn Island is inaccessible 8 months of the year. Because it is situated at the heart of the Busanga Plains, Thorn Island holds the greatest concentrations and the greatest variety of wildlife. But also, because it is perennially wet, it has large forests of large trees (Wild Figs) interspersed with thick, lush Date Palm bushes and papyrus fields.
